3 signs it’s time to downsize, and how to do it

Life can be unpredictable, and we may never know when is the right time to make a decision like to downsize. Whether that means cleaning the house (literally), or moving to a smaller home, it usually isn’t a very simple or easy decision. Typically we get to a breaking point and decide that it’s time for a change. But not to worry… we’ve put together a list to help you ask yourself the right questions to figure out if there’s no time like the present for a downsize.

1. Unused items

Do you have a “storage” room that’s full of old furniture and other items that are just collecting dust? Or perhaps the basement that’s full of trinkets and treasures that you think someday will be put to use, but that day hasn't come yet? This is the first sign that it is definitely time to let go of what you no longer have a use for. A good rule of thumb is that if you see something that you forgot you had… you probably don’t need it!

2. Empty nest = extra space

If you are experiencing “empty nest” syndrome, and your youngest has flown off to start their own life, then it is very likely that your home has an extra bedroom that is sitting empty (or collecting stuff). This is either going to turn into the burial ground of all items that you no longer have a use for, or remain as a nostalgic reminder of times past. It’s time to let go and move on!

3. Bills also piling up?

If the costs of owning a home aren’t already enough, having a larger home can also translate into paying higher property taxes as larger homes have higher valuations. If you have a fixed income and your property value is rising, this can break the bank. A smaller home usually equates to smaller monthly home expenditures. Mortgage payments tend to be lower, maintenance costs are less, and utility expenses are almost always reduced!

If any of these sound familiar, it is time to declutter...

How to declutter your home

There are many ways you can declutter your home. If you decide it’s time to move into a smaller place, you will have to get rid of some things. You can either donate these items to a charity store, or you can sell your items on a website like Craigslist (although that is quite time-consuming), have a garage sale, or an estate sale. If you have any item you believe has value (not pots and pans or old electronics), but items like paintings, jewelry, etc., these can all be sold at auction by a company (like ourselves) who specializes specifically in doing just that – finding buyers for your treasures and getting the most money for you. We can tell you what your items are worth.

Once you’re ready to downsize

Remember you’re not in this alone! After you have decided to declutter you can contact a real estate agent who can help you understand what minor changes you could make to your home which could increase the home’s value. From there, they can help you find your new home in a more minimalist space.
